Website designers and Website developers, is there a difference?

by Robert Hyde

Posted on 6 June 2016

When I talk to clients about what my job at IO42 is I go to great lengths to describe the ins and outs of coding, to which very often I get a simple reply, 'whats the difference between a developer and a designer!'

Once I get over the initial frustration that people don't know what the difference is, I have a good long think and often conclude, there is a big difference, but what is it?

So ... what is the difference and in reality does it really matter? To most people probably not, to IO42, absolutely!

In IO42 we have website designers, they are creative people and understand design, colours, patterns, textures, layout, look, feel, and know almost instinctively what UX (user experience) elements work, as a user you may not realise but the reason you stay on the site and like using it is because a designer has done their job.

What does the developer do? They start with a blank page and start creating code, its a creative process but in a very different way. With the modern web the developer has to take a design, see through the pictures and create HTML and CSS, its a cardinal sin these days to use a graphic on a website.

A developer also has to think of the structure of the code and how a search engine will look and index the page in order for it to be found, building in SEO (search engine optimisation) from the start. Coding a website is a balancing act and one of the most difficult parts is trying to create a site which reflects the design, sometime not an easy task and compromises often have to be made.

Of course not all designers can only design and not all developers can only develop but at IO42 we believe you get a better service and website as we have specialists, but having a coder who understands design and vice versa never hurts.

We believe we are specialists in design and development, we design from scratch and develop from the ground up, we never use templates for websites and we believe this give you a better website and is better for SEO.

We can work with Wordpress, Drupal and Joomla but we prefer to use our bespoke service to give you a better offering, and a better website trailered for you and your customers.

Call us on 01494 772227 if you want a website which have beed crafted by experts with code and design that is for you.
